Logitech G29 Driving Force (PlayStation/PC)

Entry-level gear-driven force feedback wheel with pedals for PS5, PS4 and PC

The default entry wheel for PlayStation: a dual-motor helical gear base with a fixed leather rim and a three-pedal set in one box. Weak and notchy next to any direct drive base, but durable, simple and constantly discounted.

AI rating

65

Fine, with caveats for a wheel base at this price. Best for: A PlayStation player who wants to try sim racing for the least money and may not stick with it.

Pros and cons

  • Complete PS5/PS4/PC kit (wheel plus 3 pedals) for about $200, often less on sale
  • Gear drive is very durable; units routinely survive years of use
  • Recognised by every major console sim, with stands, mods and used parts everywhere
  • Roughly 2 Nm gear drive feels notchy; fine road texture is lost
  • Fixed rim, so the only upgrade path is replacing the whole wheel
  • Gear rattle and clicking are audible in a quiet room

Watch out: PlayStation/PC only (the Xbox twin is the G920), and the H-shifter is sold separately.

What it feels like

Strength
Detail

Heat

Forces feel firm for a beginner wheel, with a slight notchy texture around center.

The gear motors whir and clunk audibly during hard cornering.

Brake pedal feels springy and stops abruptly, not progressively.

Like a sturdy family hatchback: easy to drive and direct, but not refined.

What the G29 Driving Force works with

  • Works on PlayStation 5 and PC.
  • In the box: Logitech G29 Wheel Rim (bundled) and Logitech G29 Pedals (bundled).
  • The wheel is built in, so it can't be swapped for another rim.
  • Pedals plug into the base, which is what lets them work on console.

Our take

AI analysis of public information, not a hands-on review.

The G29 is the default first wheel for PlayStation players, and it has earned that spot through sheer availability and software support. It is a gear-driven, dual-motor design with a 900° range, a leather-wrapped 11-inch rim, steel paddle shifters and a three-pedal set in the box. Logitech now lists it with a 2.3 Nm figure. Nothing in the box needs separate purchase except a way to mount it: clamps hold it to a desk, or you can bolt it to a cockpit.

The trade-off is the gear drive. Forces are decent for the money, but they are notchier and noisier than belt or direct-drive bases, and fine detail is limited. The pedals are workable, but the brake uses a spring and rubber stop, not a load cell, so braking consistency takes more practice. Upgrading is limited because the rim is fixed, but the pedals can be swapped for aftermarket ones.

Price matters here: Logitech's US store lists it at $229.99 (down from $299.99), and street prices have drifted above the old $199. At that price, a used G29 or a belt-driven wheel deserves a look.

Questions buyers ask

Does the G29 work on PS5 and Xbox?

It works with PS5 games that support PS4 wheel compatibility, with PS4, PS3 and PC. It does not work on Xbox; Logitech sells the G920 for that.

Can I upgrade the pedals or wheel rim later?

The rim is fixed and not detachable. The pedals connect by an RJ-style port, so they can be replaced with aftermarket pedals only if those pedals use a compatible connection or a USB adapter. Many people just keep the wheelbase and replace the pedals.

How do I mount it?

It has built-in clamps for a desk or table, and its mounting holes let you attach it to a wheel stand or cockpit. A rigid mount noticeably improves the feel.
